What on earth is the Curly Girl Method?

For those of you that haven’t heard of this cult like community called The Curly Girl Method. It consists of a set of guidelines for caring for curly and wavy hair. It was popularized by hairstylist Lorraine Massey. The method emphasizes the use of sulfate-free and silicone-free hair care products, as well as techniques such as scrunching and plopping to enhance and define natural curls and waves.

Avoid Sulfates

Sulfates are harsh detergents that can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause frizz. The Curly Girl Method recommends using sulfate-free shampoo and cleansing conditioners.

Avoid Silicones

Silicones are synthetic ingredients that can build up on the hair, causing it to appear weighed down and greasy. The Curly Girl Method recommends using silicone-free hair care products.

The right equipment

Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush: These tools are gentle on the hair and can help to reduce tangles and breakage.

Scrunch and Plop

Scrunching is a technique where you scrunch your hair with your hands to enhance curl definition. Plopping is a technique where you wrap your wet hair in a microfiber towel or t-shirt to encourage curl formation as it dries.

Avoid heat styling

Heat styling can damage the hair and cause frizz. If you do need to use heat, use a low setting and protect your hair with a heat protectant product.

Use a leave in conditioner

A leave-in conditioner can help to moisturize and define curls.

Hold those curls

Use a gel or mousse to hold curls in place: These products can help to define and hold curls in place, but be sure to use a lightweight product to avoid weighing down the hair.
