Yep, here comes everything you don’t want to hear. You need to add more products and knowledge to your life with curly hair. As the weather starts to change and heat up, you will notice your hair routine needs to change too. Make sure when your hair is feeling dry, you keep up with your deep conditioners weekly or twice a week; depending on your hair type, here are a few more tips on choosing products to use.
When the air is a little dryer, your curls can be defined, smooth and bouncy because your hair has absorbed a good amount of moisture from the air. You can experience dry weather that will suck every last drop of moisture from your curls.
If you live in dryer climates, then using leave-in conditioners, doing a weekly or twice weekly deep conditioner will be your best friend. There are film-forming humectants that will help absorb moisture but stop the weather from drawing the moisture from your hair.
Fatty alcohols are great ingredients to look out for in your products to help lock in the moisture.
- lauryl alcohol
- cetyl alcohol
- myristyl alcohol
- stearyl alcohol
- Cetearyl alcohol
- behenyl alcohol
Some common film-forming humectants are
- Flaxseed
- aloe vera
- Pectin
- Xanthan Gum
- panthenol
- seaweed extract
We will wake up on those humid days and notice you have lost your curl pattern, a bit more frizz and a lack of volume. This occurs because your hair has absorbed too much moisture from the air.
Try not to use too much moisture in your hair if you’re noticing lifeless curls. Just stick to products that have build-in humidity resistant ingredients such as:
- Polyquaternium-69,72,11,10,4
- Polyamide-1
- PVA/VP copolymer
- VP/DMAPA acrylates copolymer
- Polyacrylate acid
- Polyacrylate-2 crosspolymer
You may find yourself looking at UV protection for your hair as well, and girrrrlllllllll well done. UV products is a great way to protect your hair from that blistering fireball, along with a hat. Keep in mind that silk-lined caps (yes, it’s a thing) will prevent breakage.
Hopefully, these tips will guide you to amazing curls this summer.
